Tea for Two

When I got my hands on some of the gorgeous Kitchen Spice papers from Bo Bunny, I initially thought I'd use them to scrap one of my many kitchen adventures with my boys. But when I went through my photos, this one of my mum and I enjoying an afternoon tea treat at the Dorchester Hotel stood out, it seemed to fit well with the colours:

I wasn't sure how I was going to use one particular sheet with a large bold design, until I decided that certain elements cut out would make great accents, so I set to with a pair of scissors!

I raised the cut-out elements on foam pads, for a 3-D effect, and placed them overlapping the photo, which helps draw the eye to the picture.

I added my title using vinyl Thickers, some of the lovely velvet scalloped ribbon from American Crafts, some mini sunflowers, and finished off with a touch of sparkle with some Stickles glitter glue and Kaiser gems.

Another cuppa, anyone?

A mini album...

There has been alot of new stash coming into Papermaze over the last few weeks. So on a trip down there a few days ago i grab some of it to show you on here.

I decided to use one of the new Maya Road Chipboard albums. One of the reasons that i love these, is because you can use as much of it or as little as you like. The one i used here for example had 7 chipboards parts to it, so using both sides that is 14 pages. Now that is alot, so i didnt use them all.

They come undressed. So i normally take of the metal ring that holds it all together and seperate them like this...

I then started on the front page of the album... The first thing i did was to take out the spots as i wanted to cover them with different pattern papers...

I then chose the paper i wanted to use for this. As the new October Afternoon had just arrived i chose that.

I used these two on the front page. They are called Chicken Coop and Root Cellar.

I then added glue to the front of the front page... I normally use wet glue for this...
And then turn it upside down and adhere it...

I then cut round the edge using a knife...

Then i used a Basic Grey File to file down the edges...

I then inked the edges with brown ink...
Next i covered the dots, using the same process...

Now add the circles...
I then added some faux stitching around the edges...

And then added some lettering...
The rest of the pages are covered in the same manner... i wanted the photos to be the main focus on this album so i printed them all off really big!!!

Scrapping with ribbons

I have a mountain of pretty ribbon, but for some strange reason I never seem to use it. So when Ness asked me to focus on ribbon this month I was really excited to see what techniques I could come up with.

You can use ribbons to weave, hang, tie or attach. You can even stamp and print on thicker ribbons.

Attach safety pins to your ribbons. Hang little embellishments like charms on to your ribbons with the safety pins

I made a hole in the ribbon so I could could add a brad to make sure the ribbbon stayed secure where I had glued the two sides together

To finish off I used some bling

Instead of using brads, secure bookplates with ribbons at both ends, or turn the bookplate and use ribbons to hang the bookplate on your LO

Tie in a knot or bow and use a glue dot to adhere

Fold the ribbon and use staples to hold the folds in place

Here is a LO I made using ribbons and My Little Shoe Box papers

Using the Martha Stewart Simple Scallop Punch I punched a rectangle of My Little Shoebox Little Ladies - Michelle paper

Using a white pen I drew around the scallops

Then I took the ribbon that I had folded and stapeled and attached it to some lace
I then attached the lace to the scalloped paper
I cut a strip of My Little Shoebox Little Ladies - Jana paper and sprayed with glimmer mist and inked the edges

I cut my card to size, spritzed with brown glimmer mist attached the strip of ladybird paper and attached some ribbon to the edge with staples

Using the bookplate embellishment I made earlier I attached this to my LO using a brad
I added my photo and title
And here is my finished LO

I thought I'd share a some more layouts from the shop wall with you! First up is one from Karen that has attracted a lot of comments - she has used Cosmo Cricket Early Bird papers to create this fabulous page (although I have to say the photograph doesn't do it justice):

Lots and lots of cutting out and layering using foam pads, but I'm sure you'll agree the finished article is well worth it!
This one by Lesley uses My Minds Eye Abbey Road Whirlybird papers, and I particularly like the layered embellishment in the corner:

November workshops

This month we have 3 workshops to do.

THe first one is on the 11th November.

It is a page that has a mini album on the actual page. This workshop starts at 7.30pm. Bring with you your normal cropping tools and a big photo nearly an A4 size. The colours of this page are green and blue.

The 2nd workshop is a christmas cards workshop. We will be making 'special christmas cards' on this evening.

This is going to take place on the 18th November and starts at 7.30pm. Bring with you your normal cropping tools. We will only hold this workshop if we have enough people.

THe third one is a page based on puzzle shapes.

It is done using the new Basic Grey Nook and Pantry line. Again you need to bring your normal cropping tools and it starts at 7.30pm on the 25th November.
You will need several pictures for this one. I have used 4 photos on this one, but you can add more if you wish. The size of the puzzle shapes and there fore the photos are roughly about 10.5 cm by about 13cm. Preferably portrait size.

If you have never been to one of our workshops before, they are held in the shop, we have tea, hot chocolate, lots of gossiping and laughing. They are great fun, and dont worry if you have no one to come with it is a very easy and friendly place!!! lol. Hope to see you there.

Easy Mini Books (with the help of October Afternoon)

Hi, I want to show you my quick way of making mini books. They don't have to take days and days. I used to be terrible at starting these projects but then never finishing them. So here's how I make my quick and easy mini books in an afternoon.

Firstly, once you've decided on which photographs you want to scrap (I like to print mine off the same size for these simple mini books) then cut your card stock to size. This one is 5.5 inches square. I've then inked the edges. I personally love the cats eyes ink pads for this job.

I've stuck to the October Afternoon Road Map range for this project. Again this makes it more simple to make not having to fuss and decide which papers and embellishments to use.

The journal cards are perfect for mini books. As everything coordinates so nicely, I wanted them to stand out of this album rather than hide them away inside.

I've then added the matching stickers throughout the book.

And the mini alphas are another favourite of mine when making mini books.
I've used the Bind it all to hold it all together.

So, simple, effective and can be achieved in an afternoon.

Sometimes life just takes over - we are having some extensive building work done which has been taking up all of my time and concentration, and I was reminded earlier this week that I hadn't announced a winner!

Dahlia flowers

OOH I was sent these awesome Jenni Bowlin papers to play with. I love this range so much - you need to go check out the chipboard buttons they are a must! I made a dahlia flower for my page - using one on your layout gives the page that extra something.

For the layout:

1: start off by cutting your circle paper as shown then glue this onto your card stock using a craft knife cut all the way down in the middle of the circles but leave about one centimeter at the top and bottom.

2: cut a strip of patterned paper and glue this onto the back of your layout curl and tear the card stock to get the effect as shown.

3: cut a strip of patterned paper and card stock overlap as shown then glue your photo into place.

Now to make your dahlia flower:

Cut six circles out either using a circle punch or a compass. Take a chalk block and ink the back of each circle as shown.
Fold the circle in half so you have a crease to follow.

Open the circle back out and fold the two corners as shown so the start from the crease you made earlier.
Now turn it over and lie this part of the flower flat to the table and fold the two half's into the centre again. Repeat for the rest of the petals.

I know seeing photos and step by step instructions can sometimes be a little daunting so i have done some research if you google search making dahlia flowers there are videos in that listing on you tube so i hope this is a bit of extra help!

To finish the layout place your dahlia flower around the right hand side of your photo and add embellishments for more detail.

Using double dmc thread stitch a cross stitch shape as shown and finish off your layout by adding your title.

Big and Bold Patterns

Sometimes paper ranges are released with big bold patterns that are gorgeous to look at, but can be intimidating to actually scrap with. Some of the papers in the My Mind's Eye Ooo La La range fall into this category. So how should you approach a layout using these kinds of papers? One thing you can do is to make sure that your photo is bold and bright enough to stand up for itself amongst all of these loud prints! I had a picture of one of my cats with a fuschia pink throw as a backdrop. Lots of papers just wouldn't be able to stand up to the colour, but the bold patterns of the Shabby Chic paper were more than a match for it!

Another tip would be to try to include some single blocks of colour on the layout too. On the layout above, I have included a block of pink to frame the photo so it isn't totally lost, as well as leaving a border of white around the photo to give it further emphasis.

I have also contained the paper itself in a white cardstock border to tone down some of the impact, and made sure my title stands out by using bright white lettering and raising it from the page on foam pads.

On this page, I used the Summer Days paper to create a simple 6x12 layout. When you have bold and bright patterns, it is sometimes best to keep the rest of the embellishment fairly simple. I used a diecut from the same range to make a flourish to underline the title, and then reserved most of the embellishment to one corner of the layout, where I created a cluster of toning embellishments with a 3D effect. I have also made sure that the photo had the strong contrast needed to hold its own on the page, in this example by choosing a photo with a dark background which frames the subjects. I have also toned the photo with the paper as the eye-shadow I'm wearing matches the colour theme of the page!

So don't be intimdated by bold patterns - they can often make for eye-catching and exciting layouts, and with careful image selection and framing you should find that your photo still remains the focus of the page.

October workshops

I am sorry these have not been up earlier. This has been due to illness in the family.

The first one is the 14th October.

This is done using some My little Shoe Box pattern paper and one of the Cosmo Cricket spinners. The photos you need are 4 wallet portrait sizes and if you can they should be photos of yourself as that is the theme of the photograph. These are the colours that are being used on this page.
The workshop starts at 7.30pm, bring your normal cropping tools with you.

THe next workshop is on the 28th ( amended from the 21st ) October. This is a birthday page done using these pattern papers
You need to bring 2 photos sized 7.5cm by13 cm and one small wallet size photo, although if you didnt have a small wallet size one you could another one of the bigger sizes as it would probably fit on. THis workshop starts at 7.30pm and bring your normal cropping tools with you.

How to Stretch the Stash - Part 1

We all like to get the most for our money, don't we?! Or sometimes you may just love your piece of patterned paper so much that you don't want to use it all up on just one LO. So I thought I'd share some of my 'Stretching the Stash' secrets with you.

My first is cutting up into squares to form a grid. (see LO above) This is so effective and very easily achieved. I've used the My Little Shoebox papers on my projects which are such a pleasure to work with. They are so fun. I've finished this LO with a matching journal tag.

My next LO I've used one of the die cut journal pieces which come on the same sheet but before sticking down I've turned it the wrong way and dabbed some paint around the edges so when you lift off you get just the outline. A great way to make your own patterned paper.
I've taken a piece of die cut paper and cut it down. A good way of getting 2 or 3 projects out of the 1 piece.
And don't you just love the mini alphas?? I can't get enough of these lately. I've used the little alpha stickers, also from My Little Shoe Box. They are really good value and last for quite some time too.

My last making today is this birthday card. The patterned paper is some of the left over from the die cut paper. The strip is from the 12x12 sheet of journal bits and the cup cake is cut up from the left over paper I used from My Little Shoebox. It's always worth keeping the leftover bits.

New Bo Bunny

As soon as i knew the new Bo Bunny was in the shop i just had to have it!!!! In fact there are a few of us design team girls that had to have it!!! lol

The first page i did with mine was a lift of a page i have had on my computer for a while now. I cannot remember who did it so if anyone knows then please let me know so i can give them credit for it.
This page is done using the line Kitchen Spice. There are some seriously gorgeous colours in this line!!! seriously gorgeous!
The leaves on this page come from the pattern paper, i just cut them out. The letters are Jenni Bowlin. The border punch is a Martha Steward Punch ( i think i may have bought each and every one that is in the shop *gulp*) It is this one, which is one of my favourite ones i have.

The next page is done using the line Flutter Butter.

I am sorry to those who are coming to the workshop on wednesday. I have been trying for the last hour to upload a photo of what we are doing but blogger is not co operating!!!!

Anyway the papers that we are going to be using is the new Basic Grey Indian Summer. It is again a page based in circles so bring the cutter that best suits you for that.

Hi, Nicky here, with my debut post!

I was lucky enough to receive some of the Abbey Road Round & Round collection from My Minds Eye, just perfect for scrapping my boys and their antics on wheels. This is my youngest enjoying his scooter:

I wanted to emphasise the cirlces theme, and decided to do some stamping with bubble wrap - but this time using Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist, which I haven't tried before. It was very straightforward, I used an old pizza box to spray in (we've all got those from stash deliveries!)and just spritzed a few sprays onto a small piece of bubble wrap:

I then gently pressed the bubble wrap onto my chosen part of the background cardstock (using some scrap paper underneath to protect my workspace):

After peeling away carefully, I did the same in the other corner, and also sprayed directly onto the cardstock:

After allowing to dry, I completed my LO. I used some of the Round & Round diecuts (here & here), some ric-rac ribbbon and American Crafts Thickers for the title. Keeping with the circles theme, I again used the Glimmer Mist to spray some chipboard circles:

I added some of the little die-cuts, and finished off with Kaiser rhinestones.

I shall definitely be experimenting further with the Glimmer Mists, they're fun!

I took the Jenni Bowlin - Classic Die Cut Label Paper Receipt and spayed it with sherbert glimmer mist

With the Jenni Bowlin - Front Porch Die Cut Label Paper I cut the red border from one quater of the paper

Next I marked the position of where I wanted to fix some eyelets

Then I made the holes and fixed the eyelets

I cut a scallop border from the BasicGrey June Bug - Admiral paper using a martha stewart simple scallop punch. Using a white pen i drew along the edge of the scallops.

Using the quarter of the Jenni Bowlin - Front Porch Die Cut Label Paper that I cut the border off I attached this to my LO

I than attached the red border and the blue scallop paper

Then I added my photo.

I added some photo corner stickers and a few phrases from a 7 gypsies sticker sheet

I added my title and a BasicGrey Rub-On - Amber Black

Then i took some thin ribbon and laced it through the eyelets

I tied a bow at the bottom and added a Jenni Bowlin - Punctuation Ticket. I added a felt heart to the ticket

I finished off my LO by adding some more felt hearts

When i received these papers i had been working on a few things using some photos of myself when i was a little girl and just couldn't help myself but to use this photo with this wonderful new range. The layout itself is so simple to achieve.

steps
1 start off by cutting a strip of patterned paper and glue this into place. Using a compass cut a circle and glue down overlapping the other paper.

2 i used a tim holtz mask to overlap the bottom of the circle then glued my photo into place

3 I had so much fun making the picket fence out of small lollipop sticks which i then painted the same colour of what was in the patterned paper

4 cutting flourishes from the patterned papers is the perfect way to give your layouts the perfect matching embellishments and can make your layouts so unique i finished it off by adding some BasicGrey bling, stamped butterfly's and a few prima flowers

We have had a fantastic response to the online workshops and i have been getting lots of emails asking to have acess to the instructions. I am going to just write a piece about how this works.

You have to create a blogger account. The instructions are on a blog for you to access as and when you like. I do advise that you print it out for future use ,as the blogs will not stay up forever.

When you email me to say that you have bought a kit. I need you to email me and let me know the email address that you signed up with blogger. You do not at any point need to start a blog.

I then use your email to add you to the list of people who can see the blog. You will get an email from blogger inviting you to follow the link and then follow the instructions from there.

As i said in the other post, i do work full time and do not get onto my computer until about 7pm so do not worry if you email me and dont get an answer straight back.

We decided to do it this way instead of sending written instructions. With instructions printed on paper it is limited as to what you can write and how many photographs to use. With a blog i was able to write long detailed instructions and lots and lots of photographs. If you had a question everyone will be able to see it, and the same goes if you want to look at more detailed photos.

I hope that this clears up some questions and please email me, Vanessa or the shop if you have anymore questions.

Oragami - October Afternoon Style

This is simply my little boy being a drama queen)

Hi, I'm Lisa and this is my first time contributing to this blog : )

I wanted to try something different for my first project. Vanessa kindly sent some October Afternoon papers to me. I just LOVE them. But don't you just hate it when you have double sided paper and you love both sides?! So I decided to do something that would show off both sides and made this little windmill that does just that.
Here's how to make it:

1. Cut a piece of square card or paper. (about 20cm square)
2. Bring the bottom left corner to the top right corner. Crease and unfold and do the same with the other side.
3. Then cut from each corner along the fold just past the halfway point.
See Photo

4. Now start with the bottom left corner and gently bring it into the centre and hold in place. Now repeat that with every other corner so you end up like this.

5. Keep it together by using a brad.
Now you have your finished windmill.
I did practise mine on old paper before cutting into the lovely posh paper. It did take a couple of goes to get it right.

Then onto the rest of the LO.
I really wanted my title to match the yellow of the patterned paper, but I didn't have the right shade, so instead took some American Crafts Thickers and coloured over them. I was really pleased with the match it was also very quick and easy.

I've also used a couple of the October Afternoon wildcards and a piece of this netting too. It was too wide for what I wanted it so just cut along the centre to get the correct width and attached with staples.

I really enjoyed trying something different for a change.

New Workshop...

I have the first workshop done and ready to go for September.
I have gone a bit circle mad this month, so both of the workshop pages are all about circles. The best way to cut these out are going to be with a knife ( especially the first page) so dont forget a knife and a cutting mat when you come.

The first workshop page has 4 photos on it. When selecting your photos bring ones that the main focal point on them is in one place, as you will have to cut the photo into a circle so therefore you will not be using the whole photo. Does that make any sense at all???? lol

The workshop is on16th September and will start at 7.30pm and bring your normal cropping tools. :)

Jazzing up your chipboard lettering...

If you are anything like me, then you will love the glittery American Crafts Thickers - they can make such an impact on a page by adding a real dimension to your layout. However, what happens if you can't find them in the right shade or style for your layout? No problem - in true Blue Peter stylee, just make your own! Vanessa sent me some raw chipboard lettering this month, along with this gorgeous Scenic Route Garden Grove paper (have I mentioned before how much I adore Scenic Route? Just in case I haven't, I'll mention it again). I knew straightaway that I wanted to make a record of Ed's successful foray into 'growing your own' this year - the strawberries and blueberries were great (though the greenfly completely destroyed the raspberry plant!).

I managed to get a close up shot of some of the strawberries before we devoured them all. With such a strong photo and background paper, I knew that the lettering would have to stand out - so glitter was the way to go.

A couple of years ago, Vanessa had sent me some red Stickles glitter glue in a Christmas kit, and I hadn't used it since, so I knew this was the perfect time to break it out of the drawer again. The glitter glue goes onto the chipboard really easily, though you will need to give it a few hours or preferably overnight to let it dry completely before you start moving the layout about. This red glitter glue kept a really strong colour, and I quite liked the rough effect of allowing some of the raw chipboard to show through, but if you were using a lighter colour or wanted it even stronger, you could paint the chipboard first.

To continue with my theme of embellished lettering, I added some little red gems to the white chipboard thickers too. The embellishment on the rest of the layout was kept to a minimum - too much would have been overpowering on an already very busy layout. I couldn't resist using some more of my gorgeous Basic Grey Offbeat chipboard though - seriously, this pack is so versatile and just keeps on going!

The finished layout is bright, bold and a bit bling - perfect for Summer.

Boys, books and butterflies

The October Afternoon Ducks In A Row papers can be used for layouts about babies and toddlers but they don't have to be. Which is good because I had something else in mind.

I love this photo of my eldest son using his new-found skills to read a story to my youngest son and thought the Splish Splash paper emphasised the big brother helping/leading the little brother aspect of the moment. I also thought that the Lullaby alphabet paper was perfect for a layout about reading!

It's barely visible in these photos but I used a mask to add some yellow Glimmer Mist to the Sleep Tight paper.

I made the scalloped frame by edging a rectangle of Peek-a-Boo paper with the Threading Water Fiskars Border Punch and then cutting out the centre. The frame felt a bit fragile for my next step so I temporarily adhered it to a sheet of copier paper. I dampened the frame and then crumpled it fairly vigorously. Once the frame had completely dried, I used sandpaper to distress it some more.

I cut the butterflies from felt and transparency using QuicKutz dies. I then embellished the transparency butterflies with Stickles in turquoise. The transparency layer is stuck to the felt layer using Glossy Accents.

I created the bingo card in Microsoft Excel and the little butterfly is punched from card using a Martha Stewart punch and covered in yellow Stickles.

The journalling spot was made with the digital equivalent of a journalling stamp. Papermaze don't have that particular stamp in stock at the moment but this, this, this or this would make a good substitute.

I finished the layout with a couple more butterflies and quite a bit more Stickles which I think just may be my new favourite product!

Cosmo cricket is, i think one of my new firm favorites. The girl friday went out of stock in the shop really quick, but i managed to grab quite a few sheets before it went. Then came Early Bird... and OH MY GOSH the colours in this line are AMAZING!!!!!

There are not lots left to buy some dont miss out!!!!

It can sometimes be difficult to know how to use the giant Jenni Bowlin bingo cards. They look great, and come in a variety of designs and themes - but a huge card like this could look overpowering. However, when I received this 'Mine' card with a love theme, I knew that it would make a perfect backdrop for a layout about my other half, with the card forming part of the title of my layout.

I wanted to give the layout a really 3D feel, and accomplished this with a generous layering of sticky foam pads - several layered up at once in some places! Both the bingo card and photo are layered up with foam pads, and the rainbows are layered up on top of these. The background cardstock and little rainbows are from a sheet of paper in the Fancy Pants Kraft range - it was easy to make embellishments to match by cutting them from the same paper!

I did my journalling on a sheet of Making Memories spiral notebook paper - I use these so much as journalling is such an important part of my layouts, so I can never have enough journalling cards and papers (though I will happily just write all over the backdrop of my layout if no journalling items are to hand!).

The only other items in this simple layout are some Making Memories tiny alpha stickers (another staple supply for me at the moment) and some gem stones for a touch of bling. I'm thrilled with how this layout turned out - it's such a dimensional layout, but was so straightforward to create.
