You've Got This - Vicki Boutin - Color Study Collection

Hello, Rebecca here with you today and I'm really excited to be working with the amazing Color Study collection by Vicki Boutin this month. I've been desperately waiting for this collection to hit the shelves at Papermaze since the first reveal! Just when I thought it couldn't get any better than Color Kaleidoscope... along comes Color Study, and it's full of all the things I love about Vicki Boutin!

I was immediately drawn to the Color Wheel patterned paper with it's gorgeous bright colours. I cut out all of the coloured sections, and then trimmed each one into three smaller sections, distressed all the edges and popped them to one side whilst I worked on my background.

I felt that the bright colours of the color wheel paper would look amazing against a darker background, so I pulled out the Line Drawing paper to use. This is probably one of my favourite papers in the entire collection. It already has some detail on it, but I wanted to bring some gold tones into my layout so I decided to jazz the paper up a bit! I added some white texture paste through a stencil in several areas on the page, and then heat embossed it using a gold embossing powder. I also added some gold splatters using a metallic gold acrylic paint, and white splatters using watered-down white gesso.

Next, it was time to rebuild the colour wheel. However, I decided that with each of the sections cut into three, it was looking a bit crowded on the page, so I decided to omit two of my least favourite colours and leave the wheel incomplete. I placed the two outer pieces of each colour close together and stuck them down flat to the background, and added the centre piece back in, overlapping slightly and raised on foam. I then added some more gold and white splatters to the coloured sections and I really love how they look.

My photo is printed in black and white as I felt it would look better against the bright colours of the wheel. I matted it onto white, and then black cardstock to help give it some separation from the background, and then added a layer of the Array of Colors paper (B side), along with a layer of gold glitter cardstock.

My photo sits nicely in the gap to the bottom left corner which was left from me condensing the wheel sections. I added my title - 'You've Got This' which is from the Journal Ephemera pack and I love how the black and white pops against all the colours.

I fussy cut some of the butterflies from the Pretty Things paper and added them to my colour wheel. I've applied adhesive only behind the bodies, and left the wings flapping to add further dimension to the page.

I found a large floral cluster in the Ephemera Icons pack which sat really well behind my photo, but I felt it wasn't quite 'right' for the layout - it wasn't making enough of a statement when the rest of the layout was so bold. So I used a black gel pen to draw an outline on the flowers and leaves and that really did the trick and helped the piece 'pop' off the page.

I picked out a couple of bits from the Journal Ephemera pack - a colourful tag and a label that says 'Everything's gonna be alright' and tucked these under my photo to bridge the gap between the floral cluster and my title. I also selected a couple of tabs from the same pack and added them to the right of my photo.

I finished my layout with a couple of holographic butterflies from the Icon and Phrase Stickers which are perfect for this layout as they include all the bright colours plus the gold.

And that's my layout finished! It's a very busy layout for me and possibly slightly different to my usual style, but I love all the bright colours and the gold against the darker background.

If you'd like to watch the layout come together, I have a process video up on my YouTube channel which you can find here.

I'll be back at the end of the month with another layout using this fabulous collection.

Take care

Rebecca x
